THE PROBLEM

On February 25th at approximately 11:30 AM, a car sped down Kachina Dr. at an estimated 65 mph, lost control, and plowed through a cinder block wall into a family’s backyard. The car narrowly missed a play structure and several preschoolers who had just arrived home from school. The 17-year-old driver was arrested and charged with DUI. (full story.)

It’s easy to think of this as a freak, isolated accident, but the truth is, speeding and careless driving on Kachina Dr. happens every single day.

Residents have observed drivers texting while driving, speeding in excess of 40 mph (the posted speed limit is 25), swerving to miss bikers and pedestrians. Just three weeks before the DUI, a resident was walking her dog along Kachina when a motorist struck her dog.

Kachina is a main road into and out of Equestrian Estates. It’s also popular with cyclists, walkers, runners, and families whose children walk to and from Lomas Elementary School.

It’s time to slow down before someone is seriously hurt or killed.

WHAT WE PROPOSE:

The lower section of Kachina Dr. is wide and straight, and drivers don’t feel the calming effect of sidewalks or speed humps that would signal them to slow down.

Speed humps and sidewalks exist on the upper end of Kachina, but not the lower side where the road approaches Equestrian. We propose installing speed humps and possibly bike lanes or sidewalks to slow traffic down and give pedestrians safe passage.
